Tip jars are a way for the diarist to make a few extra bucks--ok just kidding. I always have thought of it as a way for people to show their agreement or appreciation with the diarists work. The diarist posts a comment, calling for possible tips and the tips are handed out by giving the diarist a positive rating for the tip jar comment.
